Pathway to Becoming a Dog Trainer

If you're just starting out or thinking about a career working with dogs, there's a clear route to follow. Our training pathway supports learners from their very first steps all the way through to professional and specialist qualifications. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Get Started with the Basics

Level 2 Qualification – Ideal for absolute beginners
If you're completely new to dog training or the animal care sector, a Level 2 course is the best place to begin. You'll learn the fundamentals of canine behaviour, welfare, and safe handling. It's designed to help you build confidence, understand the core principles of positive training, and decide whether a professional career in this field is right for you.

This is a great choice if you're changing career, volunteering, or just exploring your options.

Step 2: Build a Solid Foundation

Level 3 or Level 4 Qualification – For those ready to deepen their knowledge
Once you’ve completed an entry-level course, or if you already have some experience with dogs, you can move on to a more detailed understanding of behaviour and training techniques. At this level, you’ll begin applying theory in practical contexts and gain insight into how dogs learn, what influences their behaviour, and how to work with them ethically and effectively.

This stage lays the groundwork for professional practice and future specialisation.

Step 3: Train at a Professional Level

Level 5 Diploma – Professional Dog Trainer
At this stage, you’ll be working at an advanced level, learning how to plan and deliver structured training programmes for clients and their dogs. The course covers behaviour theory, communication, ethics, case planning, and working with people as well as animals. It’s ideal for those ready to work professionally as dog trainers, either independently or as part of a wider organisation.

Step 4: Specialise in Behaviour Practice

Level 5 Diploma – Canine Behaviour Practitioner
For trainers ready to expand into behaviour work, this qualification bridges the gap between general training and behaviour specialisation. You’ll develop the skills needed to assess behaviour cases, design appropriate interventions, and work ethically with more complex issues, often in collaboration with vets or other professionals.

This course is ideal if you're not yet ready for clinical-level work but want to begin building your behaviour credentials and experience.

Step 5: Advance to Clinical Behaviour Work

Level 6 Diploma – Clinical Animal Behaviour
If your goal is to specialise in cases such as aggression, anxiety, or trauma-related behaviours, this course provides the academic knowledge required by the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) for those working toward Clinical Animal Behaviourist recognition.

This is designed for experienced professionals who are ready to take on complex referrals and contribute at the highest levels of animal behaviour practice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need qualifications to become a dog trainer?

You don’t legally need qualifications, but recognised courses give you credibility, help you work ethically, and are often required by employers and professional bodies.

Which course should I start with?

That depends on your current experience. Beginners usually start at Level 2, while those with hands-on experience may be ready for Level 3 or above.

Can I study online?

Yes, most of our courses are delivered online with full tutor support. You'll have flexibility while still receiving structured, guided learning.

How long does each course take?

Course lengths vary. For example, Level 2 might take 3–4 months part-time, while Level 5 or 6 Diplomas could take 12–24 months depending on your pace.

Are these courses accredited?

Yes. Our qualifications are accredited by awarding bodies such as iPET Network and AIM Qualifications, and with ABTC standards.

Can I work with clients straight after completing a course?

Level 5 is generally the point where learners begin offering structured training services professionally. It’s always wise to gain experience alongside your studies.
